Jim Hunter was born in 1937 in Stockton, California, and moved to Alaska when he was eighteen years old. He worked as an Air Force radar operator for four years until earning a Creative Writing degree from San Francisco State College in 1963. Before returning to Fairbanks in 1966, he worked as a pizza cook, jail guard, newspaper reporter, psychiatric technician, substitute teacher, and radio broadcaster. Hunter has written over a hundred pieces about Alaska, Mexico, and the western United States. OFFBEAT BAJA, his internationally acclaimed guide to Mexico’s Baja Peninsula, was published in 1976 by Chronicle Books of San Francisco.
Messages From Raven, his other book of poetry, was one of a small group of finalists in the University of Missouri’s 1987 NEW LETTERS LITERARY AWARDS. Hunter has worked as an insurance adjuster in Alaska for many years. He married Marilyn J. in 1985. Mount, who works as a counselor in the Fairbanks North Star Borough School System, married his wife.
Jim and Marilyn Hunter continue to live and work in Alaska’s remaining untamed Interior, alternating between a secluded cabin in the Alaska Range Mountains south of Fairbanks and their home in town.
