Fried Chicken and Chorizo by James Bass
I’m sure you are wondering how my Abuelita, a 4 ft. 10 old Mexican woman from Guadalajara, Mexico, with very limited English, taught me how to be Black. She didn’t. She couldn’t. Like myself, she knew nothing about Black life or Black culture. so she did the next best thing she could think of: she integrated Michael Jackson into her Juan Gabriel and Vicente Fernandez music rotation. She got me into Martial Arts and took me to get a Jeri curl because I wanted to be like Bruce Leroy from the 1985 movie The Last Dragon. She took a significant interest in and developed a love for hip-hop and rap music and cheered me on in local breakdancing and rap battles.
And although I was raised on a diet of nopales, tamales, menudo, homemade flour tortillas con mantequilla, alb ndigas, quesadillas, horchata, and pan dulce. She managed to make me chorizo con huevos y papas on Sunday mornings before church, and took me to KFC for biscuits and gravy Sunday evenings after church.
